To circumvent the obstacles of the Arno’s winding course between Florence and Signa, making it navigable, Leonardo planned a canal that would have run through the plain between Prato and Pistoia, crossed the hill of Serravalle via a tunnel, and reconnected with the river’s natural course at Cascina.
