The Column tells a story
With its 200 meters of continuous narrative, Trajan’s Column is a veritable marble book—and the most sophisticated expression of Roman art. The frieze was carved by five artists with two assistants, guided by an outstanding figure known as the “Master of Trajan’s Deeds.” It recounts the main events of the two campaigns (101-102 and 105-106 C.E.) that resulted in the conquest of Dacia. Winding 23 times around the Column’s shaft, the narrative features Trajan and his legions as its protagonists.
