Latitude measures the angular distance of a point from the Equator and is one of the two coordinates needed to determine a geographic position. The other coordinate is longitude. Latitude is calculated by measuring the altitude of the North Star, or that of the Sun at noon, above the horizon, and comparing the figure obtained with numerical tables compiled for the purpose.
